I enjoy making homemade healthy elixirs.  It’s what I called my food medicine.  As you may have guests from previous posts, food is my medicine.  I dedicate each day practically by making food choices that consist of medications.  For example, almost daily I take Elderberry for my immune system, Seamoss as my vitamin substitute ( although it does much more), ginger in some form ( or all forms) throughout the day because I love it just that much.  A probiotic not just for gut health, but my friendly bacteria helps to kill the bad bacteria.   Come to think of it, I don’t know why it is called friendly bacteria, because I need my friendly bacteria to not be so friendly with any bacteria or viruses.  But, I think you get the picture.  Food has become my medicine.

Last year, several illnesses rocked my core.  I know that happens as we age, but I was leveled by some major diseases.  I’ve been pretty much a healthy eater, but several major illnesses caused me to stop and create a true plan of health if I was to live in 2020.  Yes, that serious!  So daily, you will see me taking a shot of something or sip of some powerful herbs.  These are my life force and it is what I advocate to family, friends, and patients and now to customers of Laeh Shea Apothecary.

Do you make health shots?  They’re fun to make and can be easily customized to what you have access to and your personal preferences, as well as those of your family.

I’m an herb and spice kind of chic.  When you consider that many herbs, spices and juices in your health tool chest, you have an endless array of potent elixirs. If you tend to be proactive where your wellness is concerned, these shots are a superb daily habit. I challenge myself weekly with new flavors and taste.  Lately, I have been on a white peach ginger kick, and my grandson and I are coming up with ways to make blue healthy drinks.(It’s our little project during Corona Craze).

DIY Wellness Shot Recipe Ideas

Here’s a secret.  My shots don’t have to taste good as long as they are healthy.  However, I am more compliant and consistent when it does taste good.  The key to a potent but palatable shot is to balance stronger elements with a pleasant-tasting base. Foundation is key. At least 2/3 of your shot consists of fresh juices, lemonade, tea, berry juices.

Consider these simple guidelines for primo shots:

Build A Foundation

Another splendid base is an infusion made from dried superfood berries. Simply soak 1-part dried berries to 3-parts water, tea or kombucha overnight and strain. Enjoy leftover “plumped” berries in parfaits, chia puddings, smoothies, desserts, fruit gels and more. Options include:

  • Elderberry infusion: Soak dried elderberries overnight and strain.
  • Fresh ginger simmered for an hour in water ( I add pineapple to jazz up the taste)
  • Try an infusion of  Golden Berries or Goji Berries.

Once you create your foundation, add smaller amounts of more potent, traditionally medicinal ingredients to amplify the wellness benefits of your shots, such as: moringa, tumeric, seamoss, soursop, acai, astragalus, noni and a host of herbs. BUT MY CRIME HEALTH FIGHTERS will always be Eldberry, Seamoss, Probiotic, Ginger and Electrolyte water.

Once you start making these electric healthy elixirs, you will become addicted.  For sweetness I add monk fruit, stevia, peppermint or spearmint.
